What is CEVO 5 Ambulance?

CEVO 5 is a full-day classroom Emergency Vehicle Operator Course built exclusively for ambulance operators. It uses a proven discussion and participation-based coaching method — not passive video — to build the habits and decision-making skills operators need on the road.

The course covers all key defensive driving concepts including vehicle inspection, vehicle characteristics, SCC (Scanning, Cushion of Safety, Communicating), and emergency and non-emergency driving across a range of environments.
New topics in CEVO 5 include Ambulance Operators and The Law, Use of Lights and Sirens, Distracted Driving, and Roadway Incident Scene Safety.

Video presentations feature operator point-of-view footage, real traffic situations, dashcam footage, and actual ambulance crash analysis. CEVO 5 also now includes behind-the-wheel Maneuvering Skills exercises for hands-on training and evaluation. The final test and certificate process is fully online.

Why Use CEVO 5 Ambulance?

CEVO 5 is designed to reduce collisions and crashes, support risk management, and help organizations protect against potential liability. It serves as both an onboarding program for new hires and a structured refresher for experienced operators — keeping your entire fleet trained to a consistent standard.

The course is fully consistent with NHTSA’s EVOC standards and has been used to train over one million emergency vehicle operators worldwide since 1998.

How Does CEVO 5 Ambulance Work?

Instructors use a fully scripted Instructor’s Guide to lead step-by-step class presentations that combine video, follow-up questions, traffic diagram analysis, and group discussion. Classroom training typically runs 8 to 9 hours depending on the organization’s specific needs.

Each instructor requires an Instructor’s Kit to deliver the course. Each student receives a Response Book used for written exercises, traffic diagram analysis, and group discussion — and to obtain the authorization key needed to complete the online final test and receive their CEVO certificate.
